A Winter Day Trip to Crescent Lake at Mingsha Mountain
Dunhuang Scenic Area (ζ¦η ζ―εΊ) offers a unique winter experience that's both tranquil and beautiful. Here’s a guide to help you make the most of a day trip, avoiding common pitfalls and ensuring a memorable visit π.
Recommended Itinerary
1. Stargazing 1οΈβ£ Bundle up warmly and wake up around 6 AM to see the starry sky π. I saw a sky full of stars right at the door of our guesthouse. If you go to Mingsha Mountain at this time, the view might be even better. By 7 AM, it starts to get light, and the stars fade.
Tip: Check the lunar calendar and avoid days with a full moon for the best stargazing experience π.
2. Sunrise at Mingsha Mountain 2οΈβ£ At 8 AM, head to Mingsha Mountain to climb the sand dunes and watch the sunrise π . You’ll also enjoy the stunning view of Crescent Lake.
Tip: The sunrise is breathtaking, with golden rays lighting up the dunes. Unfortunately, it was too cold for us to wait for the full sunrise, but it's worth it if you can brave the cold.
3. Breakfast in Dunhuang 3οΈβ£ After watching the sunrise, head back to Dunhuang city for breakfast π. We found that some popular spots like Yang Lao Qi's lamb soup and Xia Jia He Zhi were under renovation. Ordering breakfast delivery is also a good option.
4. Visit the Mogao Caves 4οΈβ£ After breakfast, visit the Mogao Caves ποΈ. If you plan to go back to Mingsha Mountain, book your Mogao Caves tickets for after 10:45 AM. At the Mogao Caves Digital Exhibition Center, you'll watch two films before taking an official shuttle bus to the caves. The whole visit, including watching the films and touring the caves, takes about 4 hours. Don’t miss the exhibition hall for a fuller experience.
Tip: If you want to see special caves, note that the last special cave tour starts at 2 PM, so plan your time accordingly.
5. Camel Riding and Sunset at Mingsha Mountain 5οΈβ£ After visiting the Mogao Caves, return to Mingsha Mountain for camel riding and watching the sunset π«.
Tip: Check the weather forecast for sandstorms, as camel rides may be canceled during sandstorms. Avoid buying sandboards at the entrance; they are usually ineffective.
6. Dinner in Dunhuang 6οΈβ£ Head back to the city for dinner. A quick 10-minute bus ride (Line 3) from Mingsha Mountain takes you to downtown Dunhuang π. While locals are friendly and the food is great, winter nights can be cold, and night markets have fewer stalls. We opted for food delivery for convenience.
Additional Tips:
- We stayed at a guesthouse near Mingsha Mountain, which was quiet and restful. However, staying in the city might be more convenient for dining.
- If you have a flight to Dunhuang, your Mingsha Mountain entrance is free with your flight ticket. For a more planned trip, consider taking an overnight sleeper train from Lanzhou to Dunhuang for a convenient travel experience.
Estimated Costs for the Trip:
- Accommodation: $60 for 1 night
- Food: $20 for 1 day
- Transportation: $40 (including train and local travel)
- Attraction Tickets: $30
Total Estimated Cost: $150 USD Note: Costs can vary based on meal and accommodation choices and travel timing.
