🌟 Baisha Lake(白沙湖)
Baisha Lake, a poetic name, is a hidden gem located in the Pamir Plateau of southern Xinjiang. It offers contrasting experiences with its lively south shore and serene north shore, both worth exploring. There are two Baisha Lakes in Xinjiang: one in the Altay region of northern Xinjiang and the other on the Pamir Plateau in southern Xinjiang. Today, we're talking about the Baisha Lake in southern Xinjiang.

📍 Location
Baisha Lake is situated in Akto County (阿克陶县), Kizilsu Kirghiz Autonomous Prefecture (克孜勒苏柯尔克孜自治州), Xinjiang, near National Highway 314. Whether you're traveling from Kashgar (喀什) or heading to Tashkurgan (塔什库尔干), Baisha Lake is a must-see spot on your journey.

South Shore:

  • The south shore is popular among tourists, featuring two viewing platforms and parking areas. While tour groups often gather at the first viewing platform, I recommend the second one. It's less crowded, offers better views, and is perfect for capturing stunning photos of the lake. The iconic photos with the viewing platform sign and the blue lake in the background are taken here. Amenities such as restrooms and small shops are available. You can also walk along the boardwalk to the lakeside for some peace and tranquility. Although there's a 40 CNY (approximately $5.50 USD) entry fee for the south shore, I didn't encounter any ticket booths, possibly due to venturing deeper into the area. The only fee I paid was 20 CNY (approximately $2.80 USD) for a photo with a yak, which was quite fun.

North Shore:

  • The north shore is more natural and untouched, with no entry fee or designated viewing platforms and parking areas. You can park your car in open spaces along the road. If you have an off-road vehicle, you can drive up the small hills for a panoramic view of the lake. Start by setting your GPS to Muji Township (木吉乡). After passing the checkpoint, you'll soon see Baisha Lake. The north shore has two viewing points. The first one has a parking area and a small hill accessible to off-road vehicles. The second point is more hidden, with a smaller entrance marked by some rocks, but it offers a wide view and excellent photo opportunities.

📌 Travel Tips:

  1. Baisha Lake is a must-see whether you're coming or going. The weather on the plateau can change rapidly, so choose the best time to take photos. If visibility is poor, continue on your journey and take photos on your way back.
  2. The road signs are popular photo spots. Be careful and follow traffic rules.
  3. Bring insect repellent and avoid wearing short sleeves and pants to prevent mosquito bites.
  4. The area is windy with strong UV rays. Wear sunglasses and apply sunscreen.
  5. The north shore is ideal for picnics. Enjoy your time outdoors, but remember to take your trash with you to protect the environment.

Estimated Costs for the Trip:

  • Entrance Fee: 40 CNY (approximately $5.50 USD) for the south shore
  • Photo with Yak: 20 CNY (approximately $2.80 USD)
  • Transportation: If renting a car, around 300 CNY (approximately $42 USD) per day
  • Food and Picnic Supplies: 100 CNY (approximately $14 USD)

Total Estimated Cost: 460 CNY (approximately $65 USD)
Note: Costs may vary depending on meal, accommodation, and travel timing.
