Exploring Winter Wonderland in Mohe, China
Mohe is really trending lately, and joining the hype was totally worth it! It's both beautiful and fun, and you can definitely explore it solo! Here's my itinerary: Mohe City ➔ (Bus) Arctic Village ➔ (Carpool) Longjiang First Bay, Wusuli Shoal, Christmas Village.
🚂 Transportation: Take a train to Mohe Station.
⛩️ Attractions: Mohe City (漠河市区): Wu Liu Fire Memorial Museum—Songyuan Park—Mohe Dance Hall (Ticket: 25 CNY—approximately $3.95 USD)—North Star Square
Arctic Village (北极村)(Ticket: 68 CNY—approximately $10.75 USD): Must-visit attractions include the northernmost point, Christmas Village (additional ticket: 60 CNY—approximately $9.49 USD), Deer Park, and Ski Resort.
Beihong Village (北红村): Longjiang First Bay, Wusuli Shoal.
🏨 Accommodation: Most accommodations in Mohe are farmhouse inns, while there are more hotels in the city area. For Arctic Village, stay near the bus station.
If you want to go directly to Arctic Village or Beihong Village from the station, there are taxis outside that will take you to the bus station to buy tickets and get on the bus (25 CNY/person). Bus departure times vary with the season, so it's best to call ahead and ask.
🚕 Taxi Fare: Flagging down a taxi costs 5 CNY (approximately $0.79 USD) to any part of the city area. From the train station to the city area, it's 10 CNY (approximately $1.58 USD).
🔻 Mohe City (漠河市区)
- The attractions in Mohe City are close together, so a leisurely walk around in the afternoon is enough. Unfortunately, the museum was closed for maintenance when I visited, but next to it is Songyuan Park, with a beautiful forest of white birch trees!
- The North Star Square is beautifully lit at night. If you want to experience water freezing instantly, the shops around the square provide hot water for you to splash around (10 CNY).
- Try the wild blueberry candied haws on the street for 15 CNY (approximately $2.37 USD) a skewer. They're sour and definitely worth a try!
🔻 Arctic Village (北极村)
- Must-visit spots include the Northernmost Post Office (next to the bus station), Arctic Sentry Post, Arctic Village Monument (these two are outside in different directions), Shenzhou North Pole Square, the northernmost house in China, Golden Chicken Crown Square, Boundary Monument, Arctic Love Square, "I Found the North," Big "North," and the China Mohe Compass (the last few require walking as vehicles can only reach Shenzhou North Pole Square, about an hour's walk, so make sure to bundle up and stay warm).
- A car in Arctic Village costs 150 CNY (approximately $23.74 USD), and it's best to find people to split the cost with. You can find carpools for this price from roadside taxis, guesthouses, and the bus station.
- Try the birch juice drink—it's refreshing! It's only 8 CNY (approximately $1.27 USD) at the convenience store opposite the Northernmost Post Office. Also, try blueberry juice, blueberry wine, dried blueberries, and Mohe ice cream.
🔻 Longjiang First Bay, Wusuli Shoal (龙江第一湾, 乌苏里浅滩)
- I visited these places on the same day as Christmas Village, and I shared a car with another girl, costing 300 CNY (approximately $47.48 USD) per person (which I think could have been cheaper). At Longjiang First Bay, I just took a photo with the monument and climbed 900 steps (and regretted it).
🔻 Christmas Village (圣诞村) Located within Arctic Village, but it's about half an hour's drive away. The area isn't very large, and three hours is enough to explore. The main attraction is experiencing the Christmas atmosphere. For specific tips, check out my homepage. A single car to Christmas Village costs 150 CNY (approximately $23.74 USD), plus Deer Park and skiing, it's around 200 CNY (approximately $31.65 USD).
Estimated Costs for the Trip:
- Accommodation: 500 CNY (approximately $79.09 USD) for 2 nights
- Food: 300 CNY (approximately $47.45 USD) for 3 days
- Transportation: 500 CNY (approximately $79.09 USD)
- Attraction Tickets: 128 CNY (approximately $20.26 USD)
Total Estimated Cost: 1,428 CNY (approximately $225.89 USD)
Note: Costs may vary depending on meals, accommodation, and travel timing.
